If you’re looking for a classic New England spring experience, it’s hard to beat a cruise along the Essex River in May. The water calms, coastal birds are returning, and seals have started making appearances in the calm tidal waters surrounding Essex. These things make spring on the Essex River so special.

Since the start of the season, guests aboard our cruises have been spotting harbor seals relaxing along sandbars and swimming through the calm waters up and down the Essex River. While every trip offers something different, seeing seals in their natural habitat is always an unforgettable experience.
May is one of our favorite times to be out on the river. The weather is comfortable, the scenery feels fresh after winter, and you can see everything come alive. The river's peaceful pace makes spring cruises enjoyable for photographers, families, and nature lovers seeking to experience Essex from a different perspective.
Since seals are wild animals, sightings can never be guaranteed — but May through earlyJune, as well as October, is the best time of year to potentially see them during our narrated sightseeing cruises.

If you’re planning a visit this season to Essex, spring and early summer are wonderful times to get out on the water and experience the beauty of the Essex River firsthand. Don’t forget your camera — you never know when a curious seal might pop up nearby.
